In light of the Milan Fashion Week’s finale and Paris Fashion Week’s kickoff, Tianwei Zhang details the upcoming interworkings of Shanghai’s Fashion Week starting on October 9th. Anticipation rises with new and returning designers, pop-up shops, openings, and runways, as Comme Moi, known for their effortlessly chic street and business formal attire, will start the shows off, encapsulating what makes Shanghai fashion so unique. However, the excitement for the design work that often inspires the trends of global street fashion for years after doesn't stop on the runways.
Much of the excitement is reserved for Paul Smith, who has grown increasingly more popular over the years and is opening a new flagship on the 13th, as well as Moncler revealing their new Genius Project after Fashion Week wraps on the 19th. Shanghai is known for birthing some of the most trendy and eye-catching streetwear styles; thus, the excitement for a full nine days of events is palpable. Garnering names like Angel Chen, set to make their return to the runway after a several-year hiatus, and the world-renowned Vivienne Westwood, it seems clear that the type of style and design work Shanghai wants to continue being known for; high fashion, avant-garde, and a cool combination of punk and glam.
One of the elements of Shanghai Fashion Week that I look forward to most is the time capsule that it consistently represents when it comes to streetwear. Unlike much of what I feel New York Fashion Week and even London Fashion Week end up looking like, a time capsule of what the last few months of trends have already been, Shanghai has a way of trend forecasting for trends yet to come. Much of what has been seen as “cool” can be traced back to what Shanghai thought was cool years ago, and with ‘headliners’ like Vivienne Westwood and Angel Chen, I'm very excited to see the looks that will keep the fashion world abuzz for the next few months.
